French and Italian Wolves

The French say they are wily tricksters

crouching with eyes glowing coals and jaws outspread

to spring upon the unwary with claws like pincers

savage monsters with fangs dripping blood red

The most famous posed as granny, sheet

tucked under whiskery chin and twitching nose

awaiting a little girl with her basket of treats

The Italians would say they are maligned

mythological nursemaids for the twins

Romulus and Remus found lying entwined

in the forest, starved and thin.

Teacher wolves who kept them warm

at night when wild winds blew

gave them love, food to eat, a home.
